Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)
To paraphrase Richard Bandler's definition of NLP, one of the founding fathers of NLP, it is a method of intensifying one's focus on verbal and non verbal sensory input via the five senses resulting in strengthening one's power towards achieving personal goals. Another way of saying this is NLP gives people more choices in life.
In the 1970s, Bandler, Professor of mathematics and computer sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and John Grinder, Associate Professor of Linguistics began analyzing success-based therapies from the work of Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, Gregory Bateson, Sigmund Freud, and other giants in the field of behavior modification.
They formulated a research model which developed into what today is termed NLP. The goal of NLP is to intelligently use language and sensory input to first alter your perception of your experience, and then use this to alter behavior, and to make positive changes in your life.
New applications for NLP has grown since its pioneer days and has expanded beyond the therapeutic community to include motivational speakers, authors, CD programs that has attracted not only world political and business leaders but also average people.
In today's marketplace, the variety of NLP-based books, tapes, CDs, videos, and seminars all promoting the individual to improve their personal condition is astounding.
For a moment, let's take a step back in time several thousands of years. NLP has always been around us, because we all have five senses that carry neuro-stimulus to brain. So what's new about NLP?
Of course NLP is not new, but grew out of a need for society to better cope with the infringing stresses caused by the accelerating growth of society. Unfortunately, urban and city living crams our senses full of distracting information such as noise/visual/tactoral/olfactory/taste noise artifacts. This numbs our five senses, which interferes with the processing pure information about the outside world.
Think about churches, temples, and spiritual places that engage the five senses to calm us down. This is NLP in an earlier era. Again think about the Orient where Feng Shui guards people's daily and business life against chaotic modern interferences which restores beauty to the senses. The Western version of Feng Shui is geomancy.
NLP has always been an important factor in daily life; it is just that we need it more than ever to safe guard against the increasing onslaught invasion of artificial and man-made overload upon our five senses, because as Richard Bandler used to say,"Who's driving the bus, you, or your environment?
By finely tuning your neuron-skills to perceive the subtle nature of the five senses, you strengthen your ability to respond more intelligently.
